Look for a new dryer under $500 in Calgary and you will end up in the clearance corner. New electric dryers in Canada start near $700 and pass $1,000 for larger or ventless heat pump models, which is why so many Calgary laundry rooms run a refurbished or open box machine.
Here is what those units are, what they cost on our Calgary South floor this week, and how to check one before you pay.

What dryers cost in Calgary South right now
Two dryers are sitting on the Calgary South floor right now, priced exactly as tagged:
- Refurbished Maytag YMED6630HC, $449: see the $449 Maytag dryer
- Open box Samsung DVE54CG7155, $749: see the open box Samsung dryer
Smaller or older refurbished units often land under $350 when they come in, so it is worth asking what arrived that week. Compare that with new stock at most Canadian retailers, where $700 buys an entry model and $1,000 or more buys capacity, steam or a heat pump.
The open box unit is a current generation model in a box somebody already opened, and the Maytag is a tested refurbished machine at roughly half the new price. Stock moves daily, so the dryers available in Calgary South page is the honest place to check before you drive over. Sizes run 27 inches wide in nearly every case, which is the standard laundry opening across Calgary homes.
Refurbished, open box and scratch and dent, in plain words
Refurbished means the dryer has been used before, then checked, cleaned, repaired where needed and tested by our own technicians. What you get is a machine that looks and runs like new, priced by age and capacity rather than by the original sticker.
Open box is a different animal: those units were never really used. They came back as returns, or sat on a showroom floor, and the only thing missing is the cardboard. They are new appliances, fully tested, they work like new, and they carry a full one-year SMS Appliances warranty.
Scratch and dent sits beside them: mechanically sound, cosmetically marked, priced to reflect it. In a basement laundry room nobody will ever see the mark.
If you want the longer version of how these categories differ, our refurbished appliances in Calgary South range shows what is on the floor today.
How to check a dryer before you pay
Six things to look at, whether you are buying from us or from a stranger on Marketplace:
- Open the door and turn the drum by hand. It should spin smoothly with no grinding or wobble.
- Run your hand around the door seal. Cracks or a loose gasket mean heat escaping and longer cycles.
- Pull the lint screen and look into the housing with a light. A packed duct tells you how the machine was treated.
- Start it and feel for heat within ten minutes. Cold air after ten minutes is a heating fault.
- Find the model plate and check the date code. A ten-year-old dryer is a different purchase from a four-year-old one at the same price.
- Ask what was replaced and what the warranty covers in writing. If nobody can answer, walk away.

Electric, gas and what your laundry room allows
Most Calgary homes are set up for electric: a 240 volt dryer receptacle and a vent. Gas dryers need a gas line and cost less to run in Alberta, but the connection has to exist already. Both need a short, straight run of rigid metal duct. Plastic foil hose is the usual reason a dryer needs two cycles to dry anything.
If space is tight, a stacked pair or a laundry tower buys back floor area, and stacking kits are available for most 27 inch models. Closet laundries in newer builds sometimes need the vent rerouted first.
Delivery, installation and haul-away
Delivery is scheduled, and professional dryer installation includes connecting the vent and levelling the machine. If the old dryer is staying behind, removal and recycling can go on the same ticket, which is usually easier than paying a separate hauler.
Measure the doorway, the stair turn and the opening before the truck arrives.
When fixing the old dryer still makes sense
If your current dryer simply needs two cycles to dry a load, that is usually airflow, not a dying machine. A blocked vent, a crushed hose or an iced outside hood causes most of it, and clearing it costs far less than a new appliance. Typical repairs run about $120 to $300 depending on the part.
The maths changes on an older unit with a second or third fault, or one that has passed ten to twelve years. At that point replacement usually wins, and a $299 refurbished dryer is cheaper than a major repair on a machine that is already tired. Our dryer repair in Calgary South team will tell you honestly which side of that line you are on.
The warranty and the returns, in plain words
Warranty depends on the unit, and it is written on the tag rather than hidden in a brochure. Older refurbished dryers usually carry 30 days, freshly refurbished ones carry 100 days, and open box appliances carry a full year. Ask for the date and the terms before you pay.
Returns follow the same principle: seven days on new unopened product with a 20 per cent restocking fee, 30 per cent once a box has been opened, and no returns on open box, floor models or as-is purchases. Delivery is non-refundable. It is stricter than a big box store, and it is why we would rather you check the machine on the floor first.
Frequently asked questions
Can I buy a dryer under $500 in Calgary?
Yes. Refurbished dryers at the Calgary South store currently start at $299, with most between $299 and $449 depending on brand, capacity and age.
Are refurbished dryers reliable?
They are checked, cleaned and tested before sale, and they carry a written SMS Appliances warranty of 30 to 100 days. The risk sits mostly in old units with no warranty, not in tested ones.
Do you deliver outside Calgary?
Yes. Delivery runs from our Calgary, Airdrie, Medicine Hat, Regina and Saskatoon stores.
Will you take the old dryer away?
Yes, removal and recycling can be added when you buy, and the old unit is hauled away on delivery day.
Is gas or electric cheaper to run in Alberta?
Gas is usually cheaper per load, electric is cheaper to buy and simpler to install. If your laundry already has a gas line, a gas dryer is worth a look.
How long does a dryer last?
Ten to thirteen years with a yearly vent cleaning. A four to six year old refurbished unit has plenty of life left.
